In a world where technology is constantly growing and changing, it’s more important than ever to engage children in learning about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Not only does studying STEM-related content help build valuable knowledge, but it also encourages critical thinking and boosts analytical skills. Plus, as children and teens learn to solve problems and collaborate with others, they build confidence, too.
While many K-12 schools incorporate STEM into their curricula, it can be helpful to expose children to it outside of the traditional school setting, too. STEM camps are the perfect way to do it, giving children an opportunity to grow their social circle alongside a group of new peers.
One of the benefits of STEM learning is that so much of it involves students in being an active part of the learning process. For children who are hands-on learners or those who like to tinker, there is an abundance of options for highly engaging STEM camps.
Kids and teens who love to build will enjoy designing and crafting robotics, drones, or bridges, while environmentally focused children may appreciate learning about conservation and wildlife or enjoy doing activities like soil studies. Technology enthusiasts can level up their coding skills or gain knowledge about 3D printing or Virtual Reality, and budding scientists can participate in chemistry and biology experiments and explore content related to astronomy, animals, or even forensic science.
STEM classes also help to build a sense of community. Students are encouraged to work together, developing fundamental collaborative skills that will be useful in the school setting and, ultimately, in the workplace. Working together in a low-stakes environment gives students the opportunity to enjoy learning while also improving communication skills.
Additionally, most STEM-related classes focus on finding creative solutions to real-world problems. Students who engage in STEM camps can acquire higher-level problem-solving skills that will benefit them not just in the specific class or category of study they are engaged in, but outside of the classroom as well.
Offering children and teens the opportunity to participate in STEM camps may help them develop a passion for a particular discipline. Success in STEM classes can build confidence and give students a significant leg up when approaching their future careers. Today’s STEM student could be tomorrow’s leading climate scientist, AI expert, game designer, or programmer.
There are a variety of types of STEM camps in Virginia. Coding camps in Virginia draw in many tech-minded students, as do other tech camps that focus on topics like robotics, AI, and computer coding. Math-focused camps that offer enrichment and science-based camps that focus on anything from paleontology and astronomy to food science are in demand, too. You’ll also find academic and STEAM programs at University of Virginia, William & Mary, Virginia Tech and other universities.
Additionally, there are other camps that focus on the outdoors with projects that range from dissection to DNA extraction. And, for little makers, there are other programs in which children can work together with peers to create paper, sew, or build and design architectural project
2. Next, be sure to match the level to the learner. Be sure to look for age ranges or experience levels. Enroll your child in the class that best aligns with either of those parameters so that they get the most out of the experience.
3. You’ll also want to choose a format that works best. If it’s summertime, an overnight camp might work well for teens, while younger students might thrive in a day camp. Again, there are options that are sure to fit nearly anything you’re looking for in a camp.
4. Additionally, take a look at the background of the instructors of the camp. High-quality programs will have educators who are certified and/or who bring real-world experience to the table, either in the form of specialized knowledge or someone who has worked in a career in a specific, relevant industry.
5. Finally, be sure to check reviews of the camp. Look for mentions of class size, the amount of hands-on work, and how much hands-on work is incorporated into the camp.
