Virginia Summer Camp Packing List

What to Pack for a Sleepaway Camp in Virginia: A Guide for Growing Independence

Getting a child ready for sleepaway camp in Virginia is a bit like preparing a garden in early spring. You don’t just toss seeds in the dirt, you tend the soil, watch the weather, and make space for whatever might grow. In the same way, packing for camp isn’t just about throwing clothes in a bag. It’s about preparing your child, and yourself for the adventure ahead and the small (but real) worries that come with time spent in real-life nature.

There’s excitement in the air when camp approaches, and maybe a little nervousness too, worries about sunburns and surprise rainstorms, mosquitoes that treat ankles like a buffet, and mud that somehow ends up on everything. For children with allergies or sensitive skin, these aren’t just minor inconveniences; they matter.

Sending your child off to camp is like planting a seed of independence. A well-packed bag is more than just completing a checklist; it’s a way to help them feel grounded and ready. With a little thoughtful prep, both you and your camper can feel more confident, knowing they have what they need to handle sunshine, storm clouds, itchy bites, and all the magic in between.

I remember one camping trip with my daughters in the Shenandoah foothills. They were all in elementary and middle school at the time, and I packed everything I could think of to make the experience comfortable – snacks, bug spray, and several small battery-powered lanterns they could flip on once it got dark inside the tent. That night, as we lay listening to the sounds of the forest, I smiled as they whispered to each other:  “Do you think raccoons know we’re here?” “What’s that noise? Hope it’s not a bear.” “This is kind of weird…but cool.” That mix of curiosity and nervous excitement stuck with me. It wasn’t just about what we packed; it was about helping them feel safe enough to wonder, to notice, to be fully present. That’s what I try to remember now when we’re preparing for bigger adventures, like camp.

Let’s dig into what to bring. Not just to fill a bag, but to help your child pack with intention and step into this experience feeling rooted and ready.

Clothes for Every Camp Adventure in Virginia

Just as a garden needs the right balance of sun and shade, your camper needs clothes that move with them through heat, rain, and everything in between. Pack clothes that are easy to move in , easy to wash, and can handle a little dirt.

Everyday wear:

  • T-shirts
  • Shorts
  • Underwear and socks ( 1 pair per day, plus extras)
  • One or two pairs of sneakers or closed-toe shoes
  • Sweatshirt or hoodie for cooler nights
  • Pajamas

This is the basic “work gear” of camp life, simple, study, and dependable.

Check with your camp for additional must-haves for special activities and pack accordingly:

  • Swimsuit and water shoes
  • Long pants for horseback riding or hiking
  • Rain jacket  or poncho
  • Camp or sports-specific clothing

Toiletries and Essentials for Comfort

Campers need daily tending and their own supplies for staying clean and feeling fresh.

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Soap/body wash and shampoo
  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Deodorant
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Shower shoes or flip-flops
  • Towels (2) and washcloth

Tuck these into a small caddy or toiletry bag that’s easy to carry to the showers.

Camp Gear for Virginia Summers

Think of this as the stuff they’ll use every day to stay organized and comfortable.

  • Sleeping bag or twin-sized bedding (check the camp’s preference)
  • Pillow
  • Flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Laundry bag or mesh sack for dirty clothes
  • A daypack or small backpack

Label everything! The only guessing games should be played while roasting s’mores over the fire.

Comfort Items from Home That Help Kids Adjust

Sometimes the small things help the heart stay steady in new environments.

  • A favorite book
  • A journal or sketchpad
  • A small stuffed animal or photo

Comfort items help some kids feel grounded when the world around them feels new. They’re like a warm patch of familiar soil in unfamiliar ground.

What to Pack for Sports Camps

  • Sports equipment, including protective gear
  • Extra water bottle
  • Sports-specific sunscreen

What Not to Pack for Virginia Camps

Some things just don’t belong at camp, and some camps won’t allow them at all.

  • Phones, tablets, or other electronics
  • Expensive jewelry or valuables
  • Food or snacks (unless approved by the camp

Leaving these things behind helps the camper to bloom fully. Camp is meant to be a break from screens and distractions, a chance to tune into the world and the people around you. Trust the process.

Final Thoughts: Growing Independence Through Camp

Packing for camp is one small way we help our children start to grow their independence. When you pack with intention, you aren’t just filling a bag, you’re watering a seed and tending a garden of growth and joy.

And when your camper comes home, you’ll see the fruits of that care in stories told, smiles shared, and the spark of someone who’s grown a little more themselves.
